The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) has four parts, which must be completed to obtain licensure. The USMLE Step 1 is taken at the end of the Basic Sciences phase or within the first nine weeks of Clinical Science, usually at the end of Semester 6. Students can only do Core Rotations if they have passed USMLE Step 1. After completing a minimum of 8 weeks of clinical training, including Internal Medicine, and passing USMLE Step 1, students can be certified to take USMLE Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS (Clinical Knowledge and Clinical Skills). International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who are certified by the ECFMG or pursuing ECFMG certification should be familiar with these regulations.
More information is available on the USMLE website.
